Day 48: ARRIVAL IN SANTIAGO!

Today was cool and overcast with the sun breaking through later in the day…perfect for hiking my last 12.5 miles into Santiago.

The path continued through the gorgeous Galician eucalyptus forests, and then I was able to catch a distant view of Santiago from about 6 kms away. The last 5 kms were spent mostly on city streets.

The crowd gathered in front of the Cathedral had a very jubilant feel, as this long 780 km journey (488 miles) was finally done. I took a few pictures, went inside the church to view the relics of St. James (Santo Diego, hence the name of the town Santiago), and went to the pilgrim office to get my official Compostela (the certificate of completion).

I’ll spend the next couple of days exploring before flying home on Monday.

This was the perfect setting for the last day of hiking
About 12 km outside of Santiago
A little chapel in San Paio
10 kilometers (about 6 miles) to go!!!
I’ve stayed in many of these places!
The first sighting of Santiago!
Getting closer!
The Cathedral.
Arrived!! I did it!!!
Tired legs. Tired me.
The Botafumiero. Hoping to get a glimpse of this in action at the Pilgrim’s Mass tomorrow.
The relics of Saint James
These shoes are completely done. They won’t be coming home with me. But, I do plan on buying this brand (Altra) again. Perfect for hiking.

This is truly one of those experiences you will cherish. I hope you make a photo book, so you can pick it up from time to time. And in your “Golden years” say…”I did this!”
