This was a gentle but consistent uphill climb today, as the path reaches its highest point tomorrow at the Cruz de Ferro. At times the path was extremely rocky, making it difficult to pick up any speed nor feel secure in my footing. The first few miles of the day, I felt no pain in
I approached today with not a small amount of trepidation. After 7 days off the Camino, and being “not exactly medically cleared”, I set off. As soon as I hit the trail, I was so incredibly happy. Happy to be in the sunshine, happy to be moving my body, happy seeing the landscape unfold in
After the urgent care visit on Friday, I was instructed to chill for a few more days and to see the orthopedic doctor on Tuesday. So, more chilling in the hotel room ensued (with an arguably gorgeous view). More exploring little restaurants (all were about 1/4 mile from the hotel), more Netflix, etc. On Saturday
To say the last three days have been frustrating is a huge understatement. It’s Friday, and I’ve not been on the Camino since Tuesday. The plan was to be better by today, and back on the trail tomorrow. That didn’t happen. When it became clear that the leg was not improving, despite massive amounts of
Yesterday was a pretty typical day on the Camino. Nothing special, except for the the fact that I got an exceptionally early start to the day, owing to the fact that I was in a shared room (not my personal preference) with other pilgrims who felt that 4-5 A.M. was a perfectly normal time to
Today felt amazing! I’m sure it’s a combination of several factors: having had a rest day yesterday, finally hiking without blister pain, a very flat path today, temperatures below 80. Several other people that I chatted with today reported that today’s hike was boring, and by extension, difficult. For me, I felt like I could
Regarding rest days…when I first began planning this Camino a year ago, I figured that a rest every 7-8 days was plenty. A classic case of “you don’t know what you don’t know”. As it’s turned out, a rest day every 4 days or so is quite perfect for me. I’ve gotten over feeling guilty
It’s been two beautiful but hot days on the Meseta. I’m in Carrión de Los Condes tonight, heading into a scheduled rest day tomorrow. The timing is good, since I’ve got a massive blister on the bottom of my right foot that is being aggravated by continuous walking. I visited the “Farmacia” this morning (pharmacies
Another day on the Meseta. It looks a lot like parts of the Midwest. Wheat fields as far as the eye can see give ample opportunity to reflect, question, and introspect. I passed the crumbling ruins of a convent hundreds of years old on my way into town, and it provided some gorgeous photo opportunities.
Today was a pretty easy day of hiking, just over 13 miles. Anywhere from 12-15 miles seems to be the sweet spot where I feel like I’m making progress, yet I’m not completely wiped out at the end of the day. The weather was perfect…low 60s when I set out this morning, to mid 70s
