Day 41, 42, 43, 44: Triacastela to Sarria to Portomarín to Palas de Rei, and a rest day.

Friday, Saturday and Sunday this week were hot, semi-long mileage days in the Galician hills. Typically, these little towns are in valleys, so the day begins with a steep climb out of town and ends with a steep descent into the next town.

After four long days of hiking, I was ready for a rest day today in the little town of Palas de Rei. Not much to do here, but I did manage to get my laundry done and will probably head to the local church for a Pilgrim’s Mass tonight.

Heading out of Triacastela toward Sarria. Much of this week’s hiking looked like this. Like something out of Lord of the Rings!
Mountain streams everywhere!
I found a little market on the way out of Sarria. The fruit was so delicious!
This is the “100 kilometers to go until Santiago” marker. Coming in the home stretch now!
Galicia is very agricultural. There were farms in every little village. It reminded me of Wisconsin!
The bridge into Portomarín. The Rio Miño is quite wide.
There is a “liberty bell” by the bridge into Portomarín. According to legend, it symbolizes feeedom and the spiritual search experienced by people walking the Camino. https://www.elprogreso.es/articulo/comarcas/campana-hermana-portomarin-vicedo/202008271531551457094.amp.html
Portomarín
Things grow beautifully in Galicia! I saw hydrangeas everywhere!
Happy to see a water fountain toward the end of a long hot day.
This was a very steep and narrow descent.
Chickens everywhere!
