Days 4 and 5: Zubiri to Pamplona, and a scheduled rest day in Pamplona

The hot weather continues. Although the trek from Zubiri to Pamplona yesterday was shaded in many parts, it was still plenty hot. Today was my first scheduled rest day of the Camino. And honestly, I thought I would be feeling much more refreshed by tonight. I’m struggling. My legs feel heavy, and I’m really struggling with motivation. I don’t know if it’s the heat or something else, but this feels way different than the Camino of two years ago.

Today itself was a nice balance of hanging out with people, seeing the sites and resting alone in my room. I went to the post office to ship home almost 2 pounds of things that I don’t need, which will help lighten my pack. I took a tour of the cathedral and the museum, and they were absolutely fascinating and beautiful. Later in the afternoon, I met some people from our little group for lunch. A couple of people wanted steak, so we went to a steakhouse. The prices were nothing like what we experience back home. Three shared appetizers, the entrée, the dessert and wine or beer with lunch all for €21, and it was absolutely delicious. in the evening we all congregated again to attend the pilgrims mass at the little church of San Saturnino.

Up early tomorrow for the 13 mile walk to Obanos!

Just outside Zubiri. A rather famous Camino sign. This part of Spain is in Basque country.
I thought this tractor mowing the wheatfield looked like a very Wisconsin thing.
One of my favorite Camino stops, I remember this very well from 2024. It’s still there in the little town of Zuriain.
Dinner last night at Café Iruña with Jonathan and Julie, Elaine, and Katrine.
Ernest Hemingway frequented this bar. They let you take a picture with a life-size statue of him, but only if you buy a drink.
The cathedral, Santa Maria
I love how beautiful that cloisters look in the sunlight.
A delicious lunch today with Jonathan and Julie, Stephanie and Anthony, and Daisy.
