Day 6: Pamplona to Obanos

Today was the longest hike so far. 13.73 miles. The morning started out very pleasant and I felt strong and encouraged by how quickly I was moving. However, by 1:00 the temperature had started to climb from the 70s through the 80s into the high 90s. Due to the heat being such a factor, the last 5 km of the day will really drag out whereas the first 5 km of the day fly by in a little over an hour.

The big story of this day of the journey is that the entire first half of the day works your hamstrings and your glutes, and the second half of the day works your quads and your hip flexors. Call me crazy, but I prefer more moderate ups and downs throughout the day rather than one huge incline followed by one huge descent. 😜 I’ll post a pic below. My knees are holding up great, and I know my legs are getting stronger, even if I do feel like I have wobbly noodle legs at the end of each day.

The place I’m staying in Obanos tonight is the same place that I stayed in 2024. It’s a lovely little guest house, with a bathtub that felt amazing, and a home-cooked Spanish meal.

Check out that elevation profile!
The sunflowers are in bloom!
The cool part about steep climbs is looking back down and seeing the towns that you just walked through.
This is the famous Alto de Pardón. The metal figures represent centuries of pilgrims walking this exact same path. There’s an inscription there that is roughly translated as “…where the wind crosses the stars”. Apparently, the path of the Camino is more or less aligned with the orientation of the Milky Way galaxy!
